The father of the world wide web wants the internet back, invents new platform to decentralize it

We all do know that the power of the web is currently centralized in the hands of a few. With the main purpose of radically decentralizing the web, Tim Berners-Lee has launched a new platform which is being found on the principle of online privacy.

The father of the world wide web believes that the internet has been misused by giants such as Facebook and Google to spy on people. According to him, time has come to unlock back the true purpose of the internet.

Tim has recently launched an online platform which aims to empower its users through the POD utility, a mechanism which according to the official website helps to create, manage and secure personal data on the web.

Within the open source platform which aims to radically decentralize the internet, all your personal data is stored inside a Solid POD. As far as my understanding goes, all kinds of data such as photos, comments, calendar events and contacts can be accessed by different applications only with your own permission.

Another useful feature part of the Solid ecosystem is the option to give access permissions to friends to part of the POD. With the right permissions they will be able to read or write parts of your own Solid POD.

Being a supporter of open source projects, I decided to give Solid a try. The first step is to register through this link.

Once you have managed to fill the registering form, click on the button Register. A successful registration will result in a WebID, an identifier which anyone can use to access your public profile on the internet.

Based on my personal experience with Solid, the content of the Public Folder can be viewed and also modified by anyone who has your WebID.

To access the files inside the Public Folder just do a click on it. With the help of the green +, you will be able to add folders and applications.

There are many applications included in the Data Browser such as Address Book, Pad, Source, Chat and Meeting. Each one of them is designed for a specific functionality.

With the main purpose of demonstrating one of them, I decided to create a multi user notepad like shown in the following screenshot.

Although the user interface may seem a bit confusing to the beginner user; one can easily get familiar with the features of this open source project in a very short time.

How to upload a file on Solid

One of the main purposes of  the world wide web is to help people share files with each other. Solid makes it really easy to share files over the Internet. All you have to do is upload the file on the Public Folder by dragging and dropping it to the green plus.

Final thoughts

Easy to use and practical, Solid is an open source project which is still in the experimental phase. Although its purpose is to radically decentralize the internet, I find it really hard to believe that the average user will quit using giants such as Facebook, Instagram and Google.
